I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, start mopping up any water, put a container to catch drips, and remove important possessions from the area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
