I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any important things, clean up any water, and put a container to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
