I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. They’ll be there quickly to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important possessions from the area, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
