I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While waiting, remove any important things from the area, and wipe up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
